Should I Paint It ?

I am having trouble deciding what I should do about painting my hutch in my dining room. I have already painted my dining chairs black and plan on painting the pedestal of the table black and restaining the top of the table a darker stain. I was thinking of painting the hutch black and the inside paneling a dark red with lot's of distressing~ maybe with some black showing through. Or maybe a more neutral tan or pewter color instead of the red. I'd like it to be more primitive looking. I know it will be a big job sanding it and painting, but I think I would love it ! What do you think I should do ? If you think I should paint it, then what color ? I don't think I want it to totally match the table~ I like the mismatched look. Oh and by the way my plan is to fill it with pewter like the first cabinet you see below. I added some pictures of cabinets that I like.

I love the red on the inside of this one!

Here is a picture from The Country Junction Blog. I always loved the furniture they had. I love the red one with the dark tan color on the inside.

I love this black with a little red showing through.

I think red would like nice too. I don't know about the different color in the inside but you know me, I am not that adventurous! LOL ~Jamie

It's good either way. You do it when you're sure what you want because you can't really go back, at least not too easily.

If your chairs and table are black and wood tone, what if you leave the paneling inside wood and do the rest black? That way it will look like a matched set...if you like that, if not, make it different.

Have a great day!

I say paint it, too. Since I joined blogland thee are several things I plan on painting. My table base & chairs are blue with some black showing thru & the table top is stained. I love it. I think red is great, also black, & on Tammy's blog I saw the coolest cupboard in red & the inner part where the shelves are was a cream color . It turned out fantastic. Check it out ~ http://countrygirlathome.blogspot.com/

I would paint it black and leave the stained look since it would go so well with your table and chairs, that's what I plan to do to mine...someday:)

I am with Lesley and Rondell on this one...black but leave the backing in stain or stain the same color as the top of your table.

It would look great!

This is what I would do - paint it black - leave the "counter top" part stained, and paint the backing an antique white or cobblestone - the lighter color will make your stuff show up more - BUT if you do it and decide you don't like it, you can THEN go back and paint the backing RED (which looks cool too, just darker)
But, that's just what I would do! LOL
I'm sure what ever you do will look GREAT!!

Well I love red, but I would paint everything red if I could. :) Black with red inserts would look nice also. It would be a lot of work but worth it in the end.

Oh my, this is so what I want to do with my dining room set! Yes I agree with TidyMom! Paint it all black except the buffet top and the inside walls. Just as you would only paint the pedestal and not the top of your table. I can't wait to see it finished! Take care! ~Beth~

Hmmm... I like black over a color. I personally like black over red. I don't match my furniture to my table because you never know when you might move it to a different place. Mismatch is ok by me.

I happen to like the "all black" look (with just a little distressing), because I think your pewter collection would really pop out against it without the distraction of other colors or finishes. But, I'm a really anal, symmetrical person--ha ha. Mary's idea is good too. Have you put your pewter up against your wainscotting color? Maybe you could paint your hutch that color, or paint it a little darker to differentiate it from your wainscotting.

I like the idea of painting it black and distressing it! I so want to paint my table and chairs too!

I vote for black, but put red on the recessed part below the doors and the same red inside with the black showing through the distressed portions.

I think painting it would be great. It will give it the look you want. And it will look good with the pewter once you are done! I really enjoyed looking at your blog. It is wonderful!

HMMM, I say black with either distressed creamy insert or leave the insert and counter part stained. But diffently black if you want to fill it with pewter.
After sanding it rub soap or a wax tart in the areas were you dont want paint to stick. then sand again for a great destressed look!

I would also paint it black and leave the back a stain like the table. I would also remove all the doors on the top for a more clean and simlpe look. good luck Dianntha
